In this article, published February 9th Eric Niller writes about the impact science has on things most wouldn't even think of, like chemicals on skis. A Norwegian ski team, Norway being a nation renowned for their skiing abilities, got 9th in the 4x10km relay. The largest claim as to why this happened was the salt applied to the bottom of the skier's skis
did not work well with the new salt applied to the course. The tone used throughout this article is very analytical, showing the science that goes in to even the little things that most people do not think about, showing the reader they clearly have done their research in the area of ski science and the winter Olympics. In this article the author appeals to ethos throughout the article, citing exactly what teams use what and what certain skiers prefer "For longer races, Morehouse begins with a standard paraffin base wax that is melted and then brushed into the pores of the ski base." this also appeals to logos he lists the chemicals that go into the making of the wax "Then comes layers of fluorocarbon powder and liquid waxes that often contain nasty solvent-based additives such as benzene, toluene, and xylene." The purpose of this article is to inform readers about the different things that go into Olympic tier sports, and that even the best athletes may have their time skewed by things a normal athlete wouldn't have access to. He accomplishes this easily, leaving the reader the satisfaction of feeling more knowledgeable even if they don't quite understand all the technical aspects.

"WHAT WE"VE ALREADY LEARNED ABOUT THE FUTURE OF CARS IN 2018." is an article written by Jack Stewart, also paired with it is a video for those who would rather watch than read. The article was written to inform readers about the upcoming self driving cars that were discussed heavily in 2017. His tone throughout the article is very informative and interested, as he appeals to ethos with the sources he cites.
What makes the article best is his tone, it draws the reader in as he seems like he is well informed and just as eager to learn about the future of cars as you. Optimism is clear throughout his article, the future looks bright for the self driven cars, perhaps for the industry of taxi drivers not so much. Appealing to Ethos is what this article does best, citing exact cars like the Dodge Ram 1500, and writing about what he saw at the CES or Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas as well as the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, making him a first hand source as he saw it from these companies close up. Jack Stewart accomplishes his goal of informing the readers about what is happening in 2018 quite well, as the reader walks away from the article with a new understanding about what will be happening this year, with the many prototypes companies have coming out, especially those like Tesla with their self driving feature. The Article "2017 WAS A TERRIBLE YEAR FOR INTERNET FREEDOM." was written by Issie Lapowsky. The article was written in order to bring awareness to the problems internet freedom is facing around the world but turns more into a bashing of the trump administration instead. The tone used is one of concern, and meant to inform, appealing to Ethos by citing quotes.
The author throughout the article sounds very concerned about the future of internet freedom as things begin to change, talking about the changes to Net Neutrality that have been proposed by Ajit Pai, something that seems likely to happen at this point. The main strength of this article is its appeal to ethos, citing many of Trump's famous tweets, his main form of communication, mostly using the ones where he bashes on the news networks that report on thing that make him seem bad, she also cites many dates in order to show when things happened to give a relative feeling of how present this problem is right now. The purpose was to inform the average American as to what is going on right now with internet freedom, and encourage them to speak out to their representatives in order to stand up against the problem and hopefully fix this. She accomplishes this goal well, as well as many others who have also spoken out against this problem. In the article "North Korea's Latest Missile Test Puts The Entire US In Range" written by Brian Barrett after the latest missile testings from North Korea. Barrett writes with a serious but interested tone throughout this article, as this topic deserves to be taken seriously as it could drastically effect the lives of millions around the globe. High diction is clearly in place here in order for the reader to understand clearly.
Barrett uses a serious tone in order to convey the danger that this could pose to us all. As nukes in any hand are a force to be reckoned with, but in the hands of a man who has been shown to have no regards for humanity, it is something that could quite literally end the world. Though he also shows his own interest in the subject, making it more enjoyable to read. Appealing greatly to Ethos throughout the article, Barrett provides exact statistics "Landing in the Sea of Japan about 600 miles away from the Launch Site. It took nearly an hour to get there, reaching an altitude of about 4,500 miles." he then goes on to state how the new missile recently tested goes above these before mentioned statistics, a scary thing to think about. He makes sure to reference primary sources in order to keep his credibility. The Authors purpose in this article is to educate us about the capabilities of the North Korean missile program, making sure that we know that we are more vulnerable that we had previously thought. However, he then calms us stating that these shots were made without a payload, significantly decreasing the amount of weight it would've had to carry, therefore in all likelihood it cannot make it as far as previously thought. He also educates us on what Trump has said on the matter, showing us that we will hopefully be alright. Overall, Barrett set out to educate us all with his article, and I believe he does it quite well. Making sure to site his sources, and going over all sides of the argument, and state facts clearly. In the article "New 'Blank Panther Trailer Promises Marvels Most Breathtaking Movie Ever" written by Angela Watercutter at the release of the new trailer, in order to hype up fans for the new release. For years fans have been asking for a superhero of colored origin, and soon, Marvel will deliver. Marvel fans all over will soon enjoy this movie, in a setting like we have never seen before, a technologically advanced country within Africa by the name of Wakanda that is only rumored to exist. Watercutter uses a very cheerful tone in her article, aiming to hype us up for the movie that she herself is obviously excited for. Primarily appealing to Ethos in her article, talking about the many different bits of the trailer that someone unfamiliar with the franchise might not notice, like the Wakandian specific technology that debuts in the trailer, as well as talking about some behind the scenes stuff including quotes from the cast. Her article is very casual, and short enough that an average reader could read it with ease, understanding everything as she explained it, allowing as many people as possible to get hyped up by her article. Watercutter demonstrates her knowledge of the movie, and uses it to convince you that it is a film worth seeing, I had already planned on watching Black Panther, but her article has got me more excited for Febuary of next year.
Chandra Bozelko in his article "Inmates Need Social Media. Take It From a Former Prisoner." Explains how life is hard for prisoners who have been incarcerated for some amount of time have difficulties adjusting to outside life, especially in the tech aspect. In a world where every day our technology advances, even being out of the loop for a few years can mean drastic changes in technology, like from flip phones to touchscreen. But for those who have been in prison for decades this change is horrific, and most will not understand. Social Media is now a huge part of our lives, something that is relatively new, and hard to understand from an outside perspective. Appealing greatly to Ethos, he relates with his own experiences, as he had to go through this all, also including OJ Simpson several times in the article as he recently got out, and may suffer these same pains. Pathos is very present as well, Bozelko makes you feel for these people, truly making you feel like these people deserve to be able to advance as we do, so that when they may make it out, they can assimilate. Wealth, something not everyone has, and those prisoners who don't will have an even harder time, argues Bozelko. Unfortunately, cell phones can be dangerous things to allow in prison, especially as they can be used to form dangerous plans that endanger the lives of prisoners, and prison staff. Bozelko believes the solution of this to be tablets, monitored closely by the prisons, but still usable.
